5 Awesome Books with GREAT Dialogue

Captivating storylines, intriguing characters, plot twists, and great writing might bring you to the party, but dialogue that makes you laugh out loud, curls your toes, or pulls a shocked gasp from your lips is something to celebrate.

Here are five indie-authored books spanning five different genres that deliver delicious dialogue and keep your eyes glued to the page.

Urban Fantasy / Fantasy Romance

Easy Guide to Escape Hell Book CoverEasy Guide to Escape Hell by Elisa Menz is exciting, incredibly humorous—I really did laugh out loud more than once, and completely satisfying!

Some great lines/dialogue you’ll find in this tale include:

“Oh, god…please be a rat.”

“Hey Horns! The name is Josephine!”

Because nothing says ‘fatherly love’ more clearly than beheading.

“Praise seitan.”
“Oh, thank you, darling.” (You have to know what seitan is—this is so seriously funny.)

Fast-Paced Paranormal Mystery / Paranormal Suspense / Paranormal Fantasy

Door to Door by TL BrownWhether it’s a caustic comment shot from the lips of antagonist John Templeton or a burst of bravado from main character Emily Swift, there is a lot of fun to be had in Door to Door (Door to Door Paranormal Mystery Book 1).

“Yes, yes, Emily. It’s just a dream. How many times will we need to go through this?”

“I don’t have time to play any games with you, Templeton—if that’s who you really are. If there’s a point to your stalking me then let’s have at it. You have something to say? Then say it. You want something? Then out with it. You don’t scare me.”

“I can’t see how it’s in your best interest to shoot her. She’s a nuisance, but her death would probably rally your opposition. It’s not worth the bullet.”

“I’d better take it now so you don’t hurt yourself, Emily. Why don’t you set it in the box, and I’ll be on my way. Places to go. Bleeding, you know.”

“Well, Emily Swift, this is goodbye. This past week has been tolerable. I’m sure you’ll do something moderately interesting in the future, and our paths will cross again.”

Spicy Contemporary Romance

Deja You Book CoverIf you like steam and heat in your contemporary romance and quick-witted back-and-forth zingers, Canadian author Barbara Kellyn (also called the Queen of Banter) is one of the best!

I’m not sure which has the better lines, Déjà You or Saint Dick (I LOVE Saint Dick)—but both books are a lot of fun.

In Déjà You, you’ll find:

“Trust me, I won’t get distracted. It’s Minnesota, for f*ck’s sake.”

“I wore leather boots. You wore a Trojan.”

“And that’s how I got the nickname Teflon Dong.”

For me, the pregnant sister (Kat) often stole the show, delivering some of the best sisterly lines to main character Hill Taylor. Kat’s quips and schemes carry on throughout the book. There are too many to name, and some are too naughty to share in a public post.

Kat smiled as she rubbed her spherical belly. “As much as I wanted to believe it was just the flu, I’m afraid there’s little doubt about it now.”

Unconventional Hero / Rock Star “Romance”

Hell's Bells Book CoverAuthor Jennifer Brasington-Crowley created one of my favorite characters of all time, a man who just can’t get out of his own way: rock star Raven Xerces.

There are four books in the Raven Song series, and many readers have said each can be read as a standalone. (I think it’s better if you read the books in order, but you have options!)

In this post, Hell’s Bells (Raven Song Book 4) snags the spotlight with some of the best lines like:

“Isn’t that what you meant by my joy day veev? I know it’s not that STD I got in France now; I looked it up.”

“What’s that thing you get for brides on their wedding day?”
“An orgasm?”

“Because he’s a prick and he’ll stink up my car with his Sauvage or whatever it is.”

Rom-Com / Naughty Humor

Refining My Dining Book CoverBruce Spydar’s Refining My Dining: The Changing Tastes of Megan Turner (related to the Shy Backpacker travel series) is a fun, naughty romp through dinner prep and a date between two old friends. This is an adults-only novel, but the spice is laced with a healthy dose of laughter.

Main character Megan breaks the fourth wall often, and the result is a book that feels like you’re dishing up the goods with a BFF.

Aside from the spatial restrictions, my bed creaks like the floorboards in a Hitchcock horror movie.

“HOLY CRAP, NEIL! You’re way bigger than James. Oh my god!”
“Who the f*ck is James?”

“Look, I don’t think that you’re slutty,” he smiles, “…although…well actually, yes I do.”

“I couldn’t be vegetarian anyway. I’m rather too fond of my meat.”
