A Spicy Romance — But the Pregnant Sister Stole the Show
Déjà You is a spicy rom-com written by Barbara Kellyn — an author known for her witty dialogue and smart zingers, as well as those hot and steamy bedroom scenes. Or, in the case of Déjà You, steamy coatroom, lake, hotel, and cabin scenes. Kellyn is willing to bring the heat to wherever a couple of hungry lovers are inclined to shed their clothes — and maybe even a couple of inhibitions.
A couple of Christmases ago, I read Kellyn’s Saint Dick (totally recommend!), and I had such a fun time, I added more of the author’s books to my TBR list. Déjà You was a lighthearted read that made me laugh out loud. Within a believable storyline — it’s possible to run into a one-night stand many years later — Déjà You’s main character, publicist Hill Taylor, finds herself face-to-face with a sexy piece of her past, tabloid reporter James Spencer Sutton. What unravels next in Hill’s life includes a VERY pregnant and “calls it like she sees it” sister named Kat; a rock star client with secrets about to be exposed; a lovesick wannabe fiancé who just won’t go away; a mother who wants to marry her off; a wild “kidnapping” of sorts…and a pair of handcuffs.
For me, the pregnant sister (Kat) stole the show, although rock star Tommy Kaine gave her a run for the money. Still, Kat delivered some of the best sisterly lines to Hill, such as “Spare me the motherisms…Jughead’s not the guy for you. Not when you can have the one who can make your eyes roll back in your head.” Kat’s quips and schemes carry on throughout Déjà You. There are too many to name, and some are too naughty to list in a public review.
Hill and Sutton are likable characters. Don’t expect Sutton to be a dastardly rogue, either. In fact, the couple are quite sweet, if sometimes misguided by their assumptions. Quite frankly, they come across as real people. You end up liking them.
The ending is a perfect blend of comedy and heat with a dash of the “aw” factor! It’s a satisfying happily ever after, and not just for Hill. Kat, too, takes home a bit of romance, and it’s lovely.
If you like the flirty banter and funny romantic shenanigans found in books by Janet Evanovich, you’re sure to enjoy Déjà You and Barbara Kellyn’s work!
Five stars to the author! Romance readers, don’t make me tell you twice — grab a copy of Déjà You!
