It’s day 1 of the #TopsyTurvyBookTour over on Instagram! Woohoo! I’m dropping my Door to Door characters into Alice in Wonderland. Here we go…
(This is a derivative work based on the original book by Lewis Carroll.)
A flash from Emily’s laptop shot a blinding pain into the center of her forehead.
She stumbled backward, staying upright only by grasping a sturdy leaf jutting out from an oversized flower.
“What the –?” she stammered, whirling around. She was no longer bent over her desk answering email.
“What have you done now, Emily?” Templeton grumbled. A step off the path, he leaned against a wide mushroom stem, arms crossed.
Emily glanced down and groaned. A frilly white pinafore topped a powder blue dress. She lifted her gaze. The scowling Salesman’s top hat bumped the underside of the fungus cap. “Let me guess, you’re the Mad Hatter?”
Templeton’s eyes narrowed. Slowly he turned. Wagging out from the seat of his trousers was a fluffy pink and purple cat tail. Emily hid a smile behind her hand
“Hey,” came a voice from her right as Rabbit strolled past. His eyes stayed glued to his phone. He thumbed a message into it before finally looking up. “Do you two know where we are? Someone must be playing with strong magic.” His attention flicked to Templeton, his mouth easily slipping into his boyish grin. “Nice tail.”
Templeton smirked. “You might want to find a mirror.”
“Why?” Rabbit turned back to Emily. “What’s wrong?”
“Um…” Emily raised her hands to the sides of her head and attempted to pantomime what she saw.
With his free hand, Rabbit reached up and felt his long, white ears with his fingertips. Realization bloomed on his face before his jaw tightened. His thumb began to slide on the phone. “I’ll see what the network knows about this.”
“I think we’re in Alice in Wonderland,” Emily said.
“Of course, we are,” Templeton snorted. He pointed with his chin. “And I’m guessing the Fringe is here as a deck of cards.”
Rabbit and Emily heard the commotion before they saw it. A contingent of cards, each with its own top hat, were rushing toward them. They pointed spears at the trio.
Rabbit grabbed Emily’s arm. “Everybody, run!”
…stay tuned as tomorrow Door to Door characters will be dropped into Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (now posted here). 😀
