⛄ It’s Day 10 of the #12DaysOfTurvy mini writing challenge over on Instagram! Yesterday Templeton gave Lucie an important gift. Today everyone finally sits down to eat. Here we go!
Back at Lucie’s, the rest of the crew put the finishing touches on dinner with Big Rabbit directing.
The ham rested while the egg casserole warmed in the oven. Heads lifted as Templeton door traveled into the kitchen, his arm wrapped around Lucie’s waist. Blushing, Lucie stepped forward and grabbed a pair of oven mittens. “Sorry to abandon you all like that.”
Rabbit licked a beater. “Between Big Rabbit and David, there wasn’t room for you in here anyway.”
“Stop that!” Big Rabbit swiped the beater from Rabbit’s hand.
Flame appeared at the top of the basement stairs holding two folding chairs. “Why’s it smell like cinnamon down there?”
“It was a festive demon conjuring,” Lucie mumbled as she set the casserole on the counter.
Sebastian smirked as he pulled wine glasses from the cupboard.
“Hawaiian rolls?” Emily called from the dining room.
Big Rabbit handed Templeton a basket. “Make yourself useful. Take these in.”
Templeton shot Big Rabbit a dark look but delivered the rolls to Emily.
“This is really wonderful,” Lucie smiled at her friends. “Thank you.”
The rest of the dishes and platters were placed on the table: a spiral ham for the meat eaters, a rich egg and potato casserole for the Rabbits, roasted Brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes, yams, a weird can-shaped cranberry-colored gelatin, and a green bean and mushroom soup concoction Emily swore was delicious.
Lucie raised her wine glass. “To happy holidays for all of us.”
The others repeated the sentiment, clinking glasses with their neighbors.
Emily took a sip of her orange sorbet punch. “Hey, where’s the top hat we were using for the Turvy? The one with the envelopes?”
“I think we took it to the park.” Tara turned to Rabbit. “Right?”
“No idea,” he answered, taking a swig of his wine as he watched Templeton lean toward Lucie and whisper into her ear.
Amused, Sebastian watched Rabbit.
Flame cast a sideways look at David – who grinned at his plate. “Who knows? Perhaps it made its way to someone who needed a hat.”
…And as they dined, in a Matar city park, a roly-poly snowman gazed across a frozen field from underneath a well-made Turvy top hat.
