🧚 It’s Day 10 of the #FairyTaleMe22 writing challenge on Instagram! Yesterday, the D2D crew mused on what sets them apart. Today the prompt asks: What’s your fairy tale challenge? Facing down dark magic? Deposing a tyrant? Trying to find true love?
“My how we love a challenge.” Tara still held the clipboard. “What’s ours? Tackling a tyrant? Good magic versus evil?” She raised her head. “Finding true love?”
The room grew quiet. Finally, Emily spoke, shrugging. “Well, I already have mine. Jack and I went through some rough patches, but we never stopped loving each other.”
Tara nodded. “It was a given. Anyone else want to weigh in on finding true love?”
Rabbit glanced at Lucie, then looked down at the floor. Templeton noticed and glared at Rabbit. Lucie snuck a peek at Templeton, sighed, and shook her head.
“I’ve got my eye on someone,” Big Rabbit admitted, breaking the silence. “How ‘bout you, Tara?”
The petite blonde looked thoughtful. “Emily, do you have your father’s travel journal with you?”
“Of course.” Emily dug into the bottomless pit of her shoulder bag, pulling out ‘The Book’ and handing it to her friend.
Tara opened it carefully, ever mindful that she was one of the few people Emily allowed to handle such a precious keepsake. She turned several pages, then held up the journal so the others could see. There, a sketch of two figures appeared, intertwined in an embrace as if spinning in a dance. One wore a top hat; the other, a flowing dress swirling around her legs. The faces held no defining features. Underneath the spare drawing, faded handwriting scrawled across the page. It read:
That first night
the View
was only you
filling my eyes
with stars.
“Oh, who wrote that?” Lucie asked. “It’s beautiful.”
“Emily’s father wrote it for her mother.” Tara touched the page with her fingertip. “I think about this kind of love, sometimes. I hope someday I’ll fill someone’s eyes with stars.”
The silence returned as the others looked at one another.
But then, someone stepped out of character.
“You will, Ms. Parker-Jones,” Templeton huffed. Then he paused and eyeballed Emily. “But perhaps they’ll find you more quickly if you start keeping better friends.”
(🙄 I guess he really didn’t step TOO far out of character after all.)
🧚This challenge runs from August 1 – 13! Stay tuned as tomorrow’s prompt asks: What is your symbol in your fairy tale? (Now posted! Click here!)
