It’s day 12 of the #RockTheTurvy writing challenge over on Instagram! Yesterday Emily found an enemy tied to a tree. Today D2D characters are celebrating New Year’s Eve in NYC – who gets kissed?
To the tune of: Mr. Brightside, by The Killers.
NYC, 5 minutes to 12, New Year’s Eve:
“Where is she?” Templeton’s foul mood worsened as midnight approached.
Emily fiddled with her pointed party hat. “Will you relax?”
“What’s gotten into him?” Tara asked before being sidetracked by Big Rabbit’s plate. “Canapes!” She snagged several fig and goat cheese delights. She looked up at the massive man. “Brown is making you serve as waiter?”
“Shh. She doesn’t know I’m here,” he said. “I’m starting a catering business.”
“I think he’s upset because Lucie’s running late,” Emily answered. “She’s with Rabbit.”
Tara focused on her hors d’oeuvres. “Who’s upset? Big Rabbit?”
“Mr. Merry Sunshine.” Emily pointed at Templeton before accepting the champagne flute Jack offered her.
“For midnight,” he clarified.
“Can you be useful and text Rabbit? Find out where they are?” Templeton cut in. He glowered at Big Rabbit.
“So happy to help,” Big Rabbit breathed, his eyes darkening. He tapped a message into his phone. The reply came back quickly and he frowned. “Huh. They’re stuck in an elevator.”
Templeton’s lips flattened into a thin line as he inhaled through his nose. He spun around, stalking out of the room.
“Wait, who am I kissing at midnight?” Tara’s head shot up. She eyeballed Big Rabbit.
“I’m taken!” He announced, backing away.
Thirty minutes later…
Rabbit and Lucie finally joined the others. Jack handed Lucie a champagne flute while Emily squinted at Rabbit. “Um, you have a little lipstick on your…” Emily touched her bottom lip, raising her eyebrows.
Rabbit grinned wickedly.
Lucie shrugged. “For good luck. A friendly peck at midnight. I wasn’t heading into a new year without being kissed.” She glanced at Rabbit. “Besides, he was terribly nervous when I laid it on him. A real kiss would’ve short-circuited him.”
Rabbit frowned.
Tara sauntered in, a satisfied smile curving her lips. Templeton wasn’t far behind, his collar undone, his short hair mussed, his eyes glassy.
“He looks shell-shocked,” Big Rabbit tsked. “He never stood a chance.”
…Tune in tomorrow as D2D characters head to a rave in NYC. Who is watching them? (That post is now up – find out here!)

Readers – Not on Instagram?
That’s okay! I’ll be sharing my Instagram posts daily here on my blogsite AND daily on Facebook at Writer Tracy Brown so you can read them there, too. Make sure you check for a new story every day in February!
What’s This Mean for Door to Door Characters? I’ll be dropping Emily Swift and crew into a story, a scene, a situation, etc. matching the “prompt of the day” from the challenge. Writing prompts include: finding a dead body, having a house party, celebrating New Year’s Eve, bungee jumping, breaking down on a deserted road, getting a first kiss – and much more!
What makes the #RockTheTurvy extra special is that I’ll also be picking a song to go with the scene.
If you ARE on Instagram, make sure you’re following me at https://www.instagram.com/WriterTracyBrown/ to see the posts there! But again, as long as you check out my blog list or my Writer Tracy Brown page every day, you can read all the short stories without Instagram. 🙂
