It’s day 13 of the #RockTheTurvy writing challenge over on Instagram! Yesterday D2D characters celebrated New Year’s Eve in NYC. Today several characters head to a rave – who is watching them?
To the tune of: Closer, by Nine Inch Nails.
Sebastian’s tall frame sliced easily through the crowd. The scent of sickly-sweet sweat and disgusting vape sticks assaulted his nose. Hell smelled better.
He’d caught a glimpse of Templeton and was searching for the other Salesman. His uptight enemy was the last person he’d expect to see at a rave.
Sebastian slithered past the dancers as they twisted around him. He liked these parties. They were fertile hunting grounds.
The frenetic strobe lights swung into a deep darkness as the music pulsed under an electric drumbeat. This time the lights flashed with the music: blazing fully on the hard beat, then plunging everyone into blackness on the off-beat.
He found himself pressed against the back of a red-haired dancer. She smelled familiar. Oh, yes… Emily Swift’s curvy friend. What was her name? Right, Lucie Bellerose. She lived in that brownstone in Matar. As she wriggled to face him, he turned away, blending seamlessly into the crowd.
Across the room, he positioned himself so he could continue to watch her move with the music. He scowled at the Rabbit dancing next to her. He recognized him, too. Filthy animal.
“You’re not supposed to be here,” a voice next to him admonished.
He rolled his eyes. Snagging a short glass from the shot girl breezing by, he tossed the neon green liquid back. “I go where I please.”
“For now.” T.L. Brown surveyed the writhing mass of sticky bodies. “Don’t get used to it.”
“You like me,” he said into her ear.
“I did,” the author admitted. “Until you demanded to be written the way you were in Doors Wide Open.”
Sebastian pursed his lips thoughtfully. “But I’m much more fun to write than Templeton.”
“At times.” Brown shrugged. She located Lucie and Rabbit in the crowd. Tara had joined them. The frenzied strobe light returned. Her attention shifted again to Sebastian. “Stay away from Lucie. Templeton won’t tolerate it. Neither will Rabbit.”
A sneer floated over Sebastian’s lips as he tossed back another neon shot…
…Tune in tomorrow as Emily heads home to cook a Valentine’s dinner for Jack. What could possibly go wrong? (Ha! Find out here!)

Readers – Not on Instagram?
That’s okay! I’ll be sharing my Instagram posts daily here on my blogsite AND daily on Facebook at Writer Tracy Brown so you can read them there, too. Make sure you check for a new story every day in February!
What’s This Mean for Door to Door Characters? I’ll be dropping Emily Swift and crew into a story, a scene, a situation, etc. matching the “prompt of the day” from the challenge. Writing prompts include: finding a dead body, having a house party, celebrating New Year’s Eve, bungee jumping, breaking down on a deserted road, getting a first kiss – and much more!
What makes the #RockTheTurvy extra special is that I’ll also be picking a song to go with the scene.
If you ARE on Instagram, make sure you’re following me at https://www.instagram.com/WriterTracyBrown/ to see the posts there! But again, as long as you check out my blog list or my Writer Tracy Brown page every day, you can read all the short stories without Instagram. 🙂
