👵 It’s Day 2 of the #12DaysOfTurvy mini writing challenge over on Instagram! Yesterday Emily returned from chasing after Templeton with bad news for Sebastian. Today Sebastian shares a little bit about his family – and Tara cuts him some slack. Here we go!
No one said a word.
Sebastian tilted his head back and stared at the ceiling, his tongue poking into the inside of his cheek. The others passed uneasy looks at one another. Rabbit moved closer to Lucie and Emily.
Suddenly Sebastian sniffed and shrugged. He lowered his chin and pulled out a chair by Tara. Sitting, he motioned to the top hat. “Pass it over, bookworm.”
Tara slid the top hat across the table. “Shouldn’t you check on your cabin?”
He ignored her, pawing through the envelopes before settling on one and opening it. “Family,” he snorted. “What am I supposed to do with this?”
“The theme is family. Do you have a story or tradition or something?” Lucie asked.
Sebastian sneered. “What do you think? You saw how he…”
Lucie swallowed, nodding. “I know.”
“What about your grandmother?” Emily blurted out.
Sebastian stared at the woman who was his sworn enemy. “My grandmother.” He dropped his gaze to the table. “Yeah, she got into the holidays. Before losing her sight, she used to host huge holiday parties.” Sebastian made eye contact with Emily again. “She even did most of the cooking and baking. Drove the kitchen staff nuts. She was headstrong, but she was good to me.”
He switched his attention back to Lucie. “Did I tell you she was a Seer? My father made her hide it from others. She didn’t want to upset him, so she obeyed the a**hole.” Sebastian’s jaw worked. “After she went blind, she was diagnosed with dementia. She was the only family member I cared about. She was the only one who loved me.”
Tara slowly reached out a hand and awkwardly patted Sebastian’s forearm. “I’m sure she did. And…” Tara took a deep breath. “And you have us this year – at least during this Turvy.”
Sebastian rolled the paper into a ball and flicked it across the table. A sly smile curved his lips. He sat up, draping his arm across the back of Tara’s chair and leaning in. “You coming on to me, bookworm?”
“Sebastian!” Lucie slapped the table. Sparks flicked from her fingers.
“Hello?” Big Rabbit called from the hallway. “Someone help us with the tree?”
Emily craned her neck so she could see Rabbit. “Did he say ‘us’?”
