🎃 It’s Day 2 of the #BeyondSpooky22 writing challenge over on Instagram hosted by author Elle Hartford! Yesterday Emily Swift and Rabbit stopped into Lucie Bellerose’s home in Matar – but no one was home. Where’s Lucie?
Today’s prompt? Who’s the villain?
“It’s locked,” said Emily as she yanked on the double doors leading into Blue Tattoo.
“No problem.” Rabbit was busy texting. He waited, then grinned, leaning over and punching the security code into the keypad with a thick finger.
“I love the network.” Emily opened the door and the two entered the empty club.
Rabbit motioned to the right. “Offices are this way. The network accessed a blueprint of the building.”
After slinking down another dimly lit hall, they heard Sebastian’s voice on the other side of one of the doors.
Emily made a face. “Well, I’m not knocking.” She turned the doorknob and pushed the door open.
Sebastian St. Michel sat behind a polished desk, an Empire Service phone at his ear. He rolled his eyes and hung up. “What a delightful surprise,” he sneered.
“Where’s Lucie?” Emily skipped over any polite exchange they might be willing to fake.
“How the hell should I know?” Sebastian stood, pushing his chair back and walking around his desk. Folding his arms across his chest, he leaned back against the mammoth piece of furniture. He glanced at Rabbit, his gaze flitting down and up dismissively.
“We all know you’re no stranger to kidnapping,” Emily snapped.
Sebastian pitched forward suddenly, fixing Emily with a mean smile. “And how is your mother?”
Before Emily could hurl herself forward to slap the smirk off Sebastian’s face, Rabbit snagged her arm. His voice was low when he spoke. “Have you seen Lucie or not?”
Sebastian considered the other man, then shrugged. “Not. But what’s the big deal?” His face grew serious. “Wait, is she okay?”
“If you see her, tell her we’re looking for her,” Rabbit replied, ignoring Sebastian’s question. He pushed Emily through the door and back into the hall.
Sebastian watched them go, frowning. That was weird. “What’s going on, Wayward Witch?” He wiped a hand across his mouth, concern blooming in his chest. He didn’t know if the unexpected visit from Emily and the filthy animal had set off his own bad feeling, but he was *not* sitting this one out.
Lucie meant too much to him.
