It’s day 21 of the #TopsyTurvyBookTour over on Instagram! Yesterday Emily and Rabbit were on the run in Jurassic Park! (Thank goodness Jack showed up when he did!) Today Emily and Rabbit enter an enchanted wood. Here we go…
(This is a derivative work based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic novel, Lord of the Rings.)
“The road ends here,” Jack said. He stopped the jeep and gestured past Emily. “Cross the bridge to leave the island.”
Rabbit jumped to the ground and peered into the distance. Emily turned to Jack. “You’re not coming?”
He shook his head. “When do I ever go on adventures with you?”
“But…”
“Go on,” he replied, kissing her forehead. “I’ll see you at home.”
Emily climbed from the jeep. Confused, she watched Jack grind the gears and shoot off back into the jungle.
“Here.” Rabbit held up two walking sticks before offering her one. “Back on foot, I guess.”
“Yeah.” She cast one last look in the direction of her disappearing boyfriend. “I guess we cross the bridge.”
On the other side, the two friends entered the forest. They walked in comfortable silence, but peace was short-lived. A black shadow swept across the path and blended back into the underbrush. Emily flinched. “Rabbit?”
“I saw it,” he answered softly. “Keep going.”
The shadow crawled through the tree limbs over their heads and spiraled down a trunk. Rabbit swore as the figure took shape on the path in front of them.
Nisha.
“I want the precious.” The Priestess’ low voice sliced into the evening air. Her silver dress shimmered.
“I told you,” Rabbit answered, moving in front of Emily. “She doesn’t have the Crimson Stone.”
“I sense it,” Nisha countered, but her attention switched to Rabbit. She regarded him possessively.
Emily picked up on the shudder running through Rabbit and stepped around her friend. “I once had it,” she admitted. “But now it’s gone. If I get through this Topsy Turvy spell, I might be able to find it again.”
Nisha’s interest wandered from Emily and Rabbit. She stared unblinking into the misty thicket.
“There’s another way out of this enchanted wood.” She gestured to a thin trail leading away from the path. “It is darker and more difficult to travel, but you can journey in secret. Take it.”
Rabbit nudged Emily. “Go. It’s not safe staying here.”
…stay tuned as tomorrow Emily and Rabbit meet a vampire from Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight! (Now posted here!) 🙂
