It’s day 23 of the #TopsyTurvyBookTour over on Instagram! Yesterday Emily and Rabbit met a vampire in the woods. Today Emily wakes to horrible torture: morning exercise. Here we go…
(This is a derivative work based on George Orwell’s novel 1984 with a nod to Stephenie Meyer’s book, Twilight.)
Inside Jasper Hale’s home, in the bright light of the kitchen, Emily secretly studied the vampire.
His neck and jawline were covered with crescent-shaped scars. According to Rabbit, they were the result of many battles with other vampires. Jasper was much older than even her dear friend.
They were introduced to other members of the vampire family. Alice Cullen, Jasper’s wife, cheerfully linked her arm through Emily’s and guided her to a private room where she could sleep safely for the night. Alice chatted as they moved down the hall, telling Emily she’d foreseen her arrival.
“But Jasper’s never told me about Salesmen or the Empire,” she told Emily. “I’d love to visit someday! I’m so glad we’ve met. If you stayed on the first path, you never would’ve shown up at our door.”
Emily nodded mindlessly and gratefully accepted the extra blankets before Alice gave her one last hug and left her to herself.
Kicking off her sneakers, Emily skipped peeling off her clothes. She climbed into the bed exhausted, her fears of sleeping in a house full of vampires fading under the weight of her exhaustion.
“Swift, Emily!”
A shrill voice shouted Emily’s name the second her head hit the pillow. Her eyes sprang open. What the –?
“Swift! Yes, you!”
Emily sat up and gaped at the television hanging on the wall. A woman in spandex exercise garments pointed at her from the other side of the screen. “You’re in the 30 to 40 group, Swift! Out of bed. Take your place!”
Emily rolled from the bed and shuffled over to the large screen. Across the bottom scrolled: Physical Jerks, 30s to 40s group.
“Places!” the woman yelled. Good grief, Emily thought. What torture is this?
“Alright, toe touches. Here we go! One-two! One-two! Swift, you’re not participating as required by the Party. Bend! Bend!”
Emily smirked. “Bend this.” She poked the TV’s off button before locating the power cord and yanking it from the wall. The room now quiet, she climbed back into bed.
