It’s day 24 of the #RockTheTurvy writing challenge over on Instagram! Yesterday D2D characters visited the zoo. Today they are dared to play hide and go seek in the library at the Congress of Empire Witches.
To the tune of: Darkness, by Leonard Cohen.
Emily, Tara, Lucie, and Rabbit stood in the far corner of the giant library at the Congress of Empire Witches eyeballing the two envelopes waiting in the center of the table. One said Truth, the other said Dare.
“Let’s do truth,” Tara broke the silence, reaching for the envelope.
“No!” Lucie put her hand on Tara’s. She grimaced. “I mean, let’s have fun with a dare.”
“Fine with me.” Tara shrugged, opening the one marked Dare. “From Brown. She says: I dare you to play hide and seek in the library. Everyone hides but Lucie seeks.”
Lucie groaned. She sat down at the table. “I’m counting to 30. Go!” The others left.
When it came time to look for her friends, Lucie left her chair, weaving through the polished library tables. She turned into the stone passageway on the right, rounding the towering shelves. The air felt like it hadn’t been touched in ages. Dust, old books, and ancient histories flooded her senses. It was comforting. She paused at the end of a row where it opened into a secluded area.
A few aisles away, Sebastian stalked through the stacks, following the scent of burnt vanilla. “Come out, come out, wayward witch,” he whispered.
“Okay, no one here.” Lucie spun around, heading back the way she’d come. She crossed a wide hall to another set of rows.
Sebastian stealthily moved closer. A wide, floor-to-ceiling shelf separated them. He pushed on a book, causing one on the other side to fall to the floor. The thump made Lucie jump.
“Rabbit?” she called softly.
Lucie had a distinct feeling she was being watched. She crept around the end of the row, stopping short when she came face-to-face with the tall man waiting around the corner. Startled, she yelped.
Templeton frowned. “What are you doing? Where are the others?”
Sebastian backed into the shadows, scowling. And he was having such fun playing this #RockTheTurvy game. Maybe another time and place. He rolled his eyes toward a door marked private, raising his energy and door traveling out of the library.
Tune in tomorrow as characters visit a graveyard at night! (That post is now available. Find it here!)

Readers – Not on Instagram?
That’s okay! I’ll be sharing my Instagram posts daily here on my blogsite AND daily on Facebook at Writer Tracy Brown so you can read them there, too. Make sure you check for a new story every day in February!
What’s This Mean for Door to Door Characters? I’ll be dropping Emily Swift and crew into a story, a scene, a situation, etc. matching the “prompt of the day” from the challenge. Writing prompts include: finding a dead body, having a house party, celebrating New Year’s Eve, bungee jumping, breaking down on a deserted road, getting a first kiss – and much more!
What makes the #RockTheTurvy extra special is that I’ll also be picking a song to go with the scene.
If you ARE on Instagram, make sure you’re following me at https://www.instagram.com/WriterTracyBrown/ to see the posts there! But again, as long as you check out my blog list or my Writer Tracy Brown page every day, you can read all the short stories without Instagram. 🙂
