It’s day 27 of the #RockTheTurvy writing challenge over on Instagram! Yesterday Emily “took the plunge” – with a little help from Templeton. Today a mermaid appears on the shoreline. 😉
To the tune of: Under the Sea, by Jonathan Young and Travis Carte.
Lucie stood at the edge of the water, gaping down at her outfit. She was going to kill Brown.
One minute she was dozing on a beach chair and now this?
Her auburn hair was loose and flowed over her shoulders. She wore a spring green one-piece bathing suit with two purple seashells printed on the material stretched across her chest. From her waist down to her feet, she wore a seaweed green, iridescent rubber fish tail. Her hands fumbled uselessly at the zipper at the back of the tail as she struggled to keep her balance.
The whine of several motors racing up the beach rose in the distance. Three dune buggies popped up into view, bouncing in her direction. Moments later, they slid to a stop behind her. Rabbit and Templeton each drove a buggy, while Tara rode shotgun in a third one driven by Emily.
Lucie hopped in a tight circle, losing her balance and tipping over.
“OMG!” Tara covered her mouth.
“Brown told us we were going fishing.” Emily grinned down at her friend.
“Unzip me!” Lucie yelled up from the sand. No one moved. “I said unzip me!”
Rabbit laughed, hopping out of his buggy and hauling her up onto her… fins.
Templeton dropped his sunglasses down his nose, his eyes sweeping over her costume. He looked… ecstatic. “Who knew Lucie would be the catch of the day?”
Lucie said a very bad word.
“Okay, Ariel,” began Rabbit as he helped her wriggle out of the fish tail. “You’re a part of our world now.”
Lucie glared at her friends. “What’s going on? Why did Brown –”
“She thought it’d make for a fun handoff. A last little bit of slapstick before you pick up the story.” Emily abandoned the driver’s seat. “But this time I was spared.”
Lucie climbed up into the buggy, her hands landing on the steering wheel. “You think readers are ready?”
Emily glanced at Templeton out of the corner of her eye. “Yeah. I think everyone is ready.”
“Let’s go,” interrupted Rabbit. “We’ve got an hour before Big Rabbit picks us up and takes us home.”
Tune in tomorrow as we wrap up the #RockTheTurvy challenge! (That post is now available. Find it here!)

Readers – Not on Instagram?
That’s okay! I’ll be sharing my Instagram posts daily here on my blogsite AND daily on Facebook at Writer Tracy Brown so you can read them there, too. Make sure you check for a new story every day in February!
What’s This Mean for Door to Door Characters? I’ll be dropping Emily Swift and crew into a story, a scene, a situation, etc. matching the “prompt of the day” from the challenge. Writing prompts include: finding a dead body, having a house party, celebrating New Year’s Eve, bungee jumping, breaking down on a deserted road, getting a first kiss – and much more!
What makes the #RockTheTurvy extra special is that I’ll also be picking a song to go with the scene.
If you ARE on Instagram, make sure you’re following me at https://www.instagram.com/WriterTracyBrown/ to see the posts there! But again, as long as you check out my blog list or my Writer Tracy Brown page every day, you can read all the short stories without Instagram. 🙂
