🎃 It’s Day 3 of the #BeyondSpooky22 writing challenge over on Instagram hosted by author Elle Hartford! Yesterday Emily Swift and Rabbit paid a visit to one of their enemies.
Today’s prompt? Who’s in danger?
Lucie Bellerose sat in the comfortable chair waiting for her host, frowning at the useless network phone in her hand.
Something strange kept happening. The battery drained quickly, and there were times when the screen would scroll through a random selection of numbers. She needed to ask Rabbit if she could swap it out for another.
“I’m sorry to have kept you waiting,” Loren Heatherworth apologized as he joined her in the parlor of his home.
“It’s fine,” Lucie assured her friend as she rose and hugged the older witch. Her gaze swept past Loren to the man who followed him. She pulled back. “I didn’t know you had company.”
“It’s good to see you again,” Seth Vanvolkenburg greeted her. “I hope you’re giving serious thought to my invitation to help me build a library of resources here in the Empire.”
Lucie offered a tight smile. “I’m still considering your offer. I’ll be in touch soon.”
“Good.” Seth glanced at Loren. “I look forward to meeting your wife next week. Please arrive early for drinks.”
“Of course,” Loren replied. He motioned for Lucie to return to her seat before he saw the other witch out.
Lucie waited uneasily. Seth hadn’t given her any reason to be suspicious, but there was something she couldn’t quite nail down – something that whispered in the back of her mind to be careful. He might not be of the Empire, he might be willing to stand up to what was left of the CEW, but…
“You should join us when we have dinner with Seth,” Loren said upon return. He lowered himself into the chair across from her. “He’s a good ally to have following…” Loren lifted a hand. “Following the interruption of Congress business.”
“That’s an interesting way of putting it,” Lucie grimaced. “And maybe he is. But there’s something…I don’t know. A feeling I can’t shake.”
Loren regarded the woman who was like a daughter to him. “Your reluctance after Richardson is understandable. But the Vanvolkenburg Witchline is strong. The witchlines he describes haven’t suffered like ours. He’s not a threat.”
Lucie tilted her head. “I’m not so sure of that.”
To be continued in the next post…
