🎃 It’s Day 4 of the #BeyondSpooky22 writing challenge over on Instagram hosted by author Elle Hartford! Yesterday Lucie Bellerose ran into an unexpected guest at a friend’s house.
Today’s prompt? Build the tension.
Sebastian door traveled from Blue Tattoo straight into Lucie’s kitchen via her pantry door.
A corner of his mouth lifted. The wards allowed him to enter. Fortunately, Lucie still had a soft spot for him. Listening carefully, he decided no one was home. Good. He could snoop.
“So where have you gone, Wayward Witch? Why are they so worried?” Sebastian nosed through papers left on the counter. When nothing seemed out of the ordinary, he flipped open the notebook where Lucie jotted down random notes and lists. Most of it was unremarkable, but a name caught his eye.
Seth Vanvolkenburg. It was underlined twice. Nothing else was written on the page.
Vanvolkenburg. Sebastian tapped a fingertip on the counter. He’d heard rumors of a witch from outside the Empire buying up available property to the north of Matar. The name of this mysterious buyer was Vanvolkenburg. Was this “Seth” the same person? Either way, who was he, and what was his connection to Lucie?
Sebastian pursed his lips. Maybe he’d do some digging to check this joker out. Can’t have Lucie associating with unsavory characters, after all. Smirking, Sebastian turned to find Lucie’s boarder standing with his hands on his hips.
“What, you just make yourself at home now, wannabe? Is that it? Stroll in whenever you want?” Flame’s amber eyes narrowed.
“Save it, junior.” Annoyed, Sebastian grabbed the notebook and pointed to the name. “What do you know about this guy?”
Flame glanced at the page. “He’s some witch who offered Lucie a job while she decides what she’s going to do now that…” Flame waved a hand and shrugged. “Anyhow, I don’t know much about him.”
“She really needs to stay away from his kind.” Sebastian tossed the notebook back onto the counter.
“She *is* his kind,” Flame rolled his eyes.
“And she’s been treated so well by them,” Sebastian snapped. “Tell her I’m looking for her when she comes back here.” With that, Sebastian stalked past the younger man and door traveled out the pantry door.
Flame picked up the notepad, his pupils flickering from human to cat and back. A bad feeling stirred in his gut…
