🧚 It’s Day 4 of the #FairyTaleMe22 writing challenge on Instagram! Yesterday, an intense conversation ended with one man condemned. Today’s prompt: Magic, yes or no? Does your fairy tale have curses and spells, or even witches and sorcery? Or none of the above?
“Well,” Big Rabbit puffed up his cheeks and blew out a breath. “Where were we?”
He looked back down at the clipboard. “Next prompt. This one’s easy. Is there magic in your fairy tale? Spells? Curses? Magical beings?”
“I can’t imagine a world without magic,” Lucie said. “It’s a yes for me on all of the above.”
“Even curses?” Emily asked. She put a chicken salad wrap on a plate.
“Part and parcel.” Lucie raised a shoulder.
“Have you ever cursed anyone?” Tara climbed up on a barstool beside her.
“Um…” Lucie sucked in her lower lip. “No?”
Tara laughed. “Liar.”
“What about you?” Lucie countered. “You don’t come from a world where magic is the status quo.”
“Oh, I definitely would want magic in my fairy tale.” Tara sipped her Rooster Broo. “I’d like to be able to do it – like Emily.”
“You don’t want to ‘do it like Emily’ – trust me.” Templeton poured himself a Scotch.
Emily’s mouth popped open. Rabbit reached over, placing a finger under her chin and lifting. “That’s not a good look,” he teased.
“Magic can also be taught,” Lucie explained to Tara. “I could teach you some basic spells.”
“What about magical objects like the Crimson Stone?” Emily took a bite of her wrap and chewed. “Would we add them to our fairy tale?”
“Why wouldn’t we have them?” Lucie asked.
“I’m not saying we shouldn’t, but they come with a price. People are always trying to steal them, or they might lose their power when you need it the most.” Emily cringed. Whoops.
Lucie ran a hand through her hair and glanced at Templeton. “Yeah. I get it.”
He listened to the discussion over his glass. “Everything worthwhile comes with a price, Lucie. You know that.”
“Does it?” She shook her head. “I hope that’s not true.”
“In my experience, it is.” He didn’t look away.
“Alright, that’s a big yes to magic in our fairy tales then.” Big Rabbit passed the clipboard to Rabbit. He grinned. “And now it’s time for me to eat.”
🧚This challenge runs from August 1 – 13! Stay tuned as tomorrow’s prompt asks, steampunk or science? (That post is now available: Click here.)
