It’s day 4 of the #RockTheTurvy writing challenge over on Instagram! Yesterday Emily Swift and crew sang at a roadside Karaoke bar. Today, a time machine sends them back to the 70s.
To the tune of: Look Good in Blue, by Blondie.
Later that night, after a dinner of burgers, fries, and lukewarm beer, the crew exited the karaoke bar. They paused in the parking lot. Their SUV was missing.
“Oh, right!” Rabbit dug into his jeans pocket. “When Emily was ‘killing us softly’ with her song–”
“Hey!” Emily’s hands landed on her hips.
“–the waitress dropped this off. It’s another note from Brown.” He held the paper at an angle to catch the light from the streetlamp. “It says: You’ve been drinking, so no driving. Try the time machine behind the bar.”
“Woohoo!” Tara took off running.
“And they think Emily’s the adventurous one?” Lucie shook her head as they followed the petite blonde.
Tara waited for the others inside a large blue box. “It’s like the Tardis, but bigger on the outside!” She vibrated with excitement. “Buckle up. We’re going dancing!”
“Kill me now,” Templeton mumbled as he picked a seat.
Tara pushed a button and the Big Blue Box spun in a circle. Lights flashed. A voice announced they’d arrived at Funky Town.
The roadside bar was now a disco.
The three ladies, decked out in shiny vintage jumpsuits, boogied their way into the noisy dance club. Rabbit and Templeton glimpsed a mirrored disco ball spinning on the other side of the door before it shut.
“Yeah, I’m going to take a pass on this,” said Rabbit. He dug out his phone and ran a thumb over the screen. “The network found our SUV. Big Rabbit is on his way.” He looked up at Templeton. “We’ll get the girls when he arrives and then we’ll find our hotel.”
“I’m not going in there,” Templeton frowned.
“Then we’ll wait. Unless…” His eyes cut to the time machine’s dial. “Unless you want to give it a spin?”
“Since we’re already in the 70s,” Templeton began, a sly smile forming on his lips. Long fingers set the destination for NYC, 1977, CBGB. “Blondie’s on stage tonight.”
Rabbit’s face split into a broad grin. “This might be the nicest thing you’ve ever done for me, Templeton.”
…Tune in tomorrow as the D2D crew ends up at the beach! Pass the sunscreen! (The beach post is up! Click here!)

Readers – Not on Instagram?
That’s okay! I’ll be sharing my Instagram posts daily here on my blogsite AND daily on Facebook at Writer Tracy Brown so you can read them there, too. Make sure you check for a new story every day in February!
What’s This Mean for Door to Door Characters? I’ll be dropping Emily Swift and crew into a story, a scene, a situation, etc. matching the “prompt of the day” from the challenge. Writing prompts include: finding a dead body, having a house party, celebrating New Year’s Eve, bungee jumping, breaking down on a deserted road, getting a first kiss – and much more!
What makes the #RockTheTurvy extra special is that I’ll also be picking a song to go with the scene.
If you ARE on Instagram, make sure you’re following me at https://www.instagram.com/WriterTracyBrown/ to see the posts there! But again, as long as you check out my blog list or my Writer Tracy Brown page every day, you can read all the short stories without Instagram. 🙂
