🔥 It’s Day 5 of the #12DaysOfTurvy mini writing challenge over on Instagram! Yesterday Tara revealed a “quirky tradition.” Today tree decorating gets a little out of hand. Here we go!
In the cozy living room, the too-big tree pressed into a corner by the window.
“Half the tree is squished up against the wall,” Rabbit observed.
“It’s the only way to get it to fit,” Emily said. “We’ll put the candles in the front.”
“This is a fire hazard,” David worried. He motioned to an open box. “We should stick to a string of lights.”
Emily dismissed him with a hand wave. “Lucie knows how to control fire. It’s fine.”
David bit his bottom lip and glanced at Flame.
“She’s right,” Flame replied, purring happily as he sorted through strands of tinsel. “Luscious can handle it.”
In the opposite corner of the room, Big Rabbit lowered the needle on a record. “How about some holiday entertainment?” An acoustic guitar strummed out a familiar tune.
“That’s nice,” Emily nodded. Seconds later, an electric wail sliced through the gentle music, the noise blasting out of the small speaker.
“Is that Trans-Siberian Orchestra?” Rabbit cringed. “Turn that crap off.”
“It only sounds bad because it’s such a little record player,” Big Rabbit argued. “She needs a stereo.”
“I’ll buy her one,” Sebastian mumbled around the candy cane sticking out of the corner of his mouth. Bored, he poked through a box of ornaments.
Flame spun around. “You can’t buy your way into a person’s heart, wannabe.”
Sebastian lifted his head, his gaze moving slowly from Flame, to David, and back again. He pulled the candy stick out of his mouth. “No? Huh. Maybe we should ask David?”
Flame moved so fast, even Sebastian was surprised. Grabbing the older man by his collar, Flame slammed Sebastian against the wall. The pupils in Flame’s eyes narrowed and lengthened. A low growl replaced the purring in his chest.
Big Rabbit quickly separated the two. David pulled Flame away, and a snarling Sebastian was held tight by Big Rabbit. Suddenly the air around them crackled.
“What in the name of the Empire is going on in here?” Lucie shouted from the doorway as the Heatherworths exited hastily behind her. “Sebastian! Flame! Outside!”
Big Rabbit’s girlfriend, silent until that moment, spoke. “I think that’s a great idea, Lucie – and I have a suggestion.”
