🧚 It’s Day 5 of the #FairyTaleMe22 writing challenge on Instagram! Yesterday, characters discussed using magic in their fairy tale. Today’s prompt: Steampunk and Science: How about crazy laboratories or steam-powered automobiles?
Rabbit read the prompt. “This one is asking if we’re using any sci-fi or steampunk in our fairy tale.”
“I’m not really that well-versed in either.” Emily finished off the last bite of her lunch and eyeballed another helping.
“You’re considering a second one?” Tara teased.
“Shut up.” Emily snatched a Reuben-style wrap from the tray.
“I read Asimov’s ‘Foundation,’ but that was years ago,” Lucie said. “That’s the extent of my sci-fi. It’s more than I know about steampunk.”
“I’ve read several of Frank Herbert’s books, but yeah, no steampunk,” Rabbit replied. “Templeton, you’re a big sci-fi fan – want to add your two cents?”
“No.” Templeton picked up the ‘Matar Daily’ and began to read.
“Helpful as always,” muttered Rabbit.
“Oh!” Emily sat up. “I read ‘Soulless’ – it’s one of the Parasol Protectorate series books. That’s steampunk, right?”
“Gaslamp fantasy,” corrected Tara. Every face but Templeton’s went blank.
“I’m mostly into romance novels,” Big Rabbit shrugged. “And happy endings.”
Tara grinned evilly.
“Not *that* kind of happy ending,” Lucie cut in, pointing her finger at Tara. “Don’t even go there.”
“I’m thinking it’s a no for sci-fi and steampunk in our fairy tale.” Rabbit announced. He put a checkmark by the prompt and set the clipboard on the table.
“So, our fairy tale’s just going to run on the paranormal mystery and adult dark fantasy end of things then?” Emily wiped her fingers on a napkin.
“Yup, nothing wrong with that.” Rabbit opened the door leading directly to the outside. “I think we could all use some fresh air about now. Anyone want to join me?”
🧚This challenge runs from August 1 – 13! Stay tuned as tomorrow’s prompt asks, who is your fairy tale companion? (That post is now available here.)
