It’s day 5 of the #RockTheTurvy writing challenge over on Instagram! Yesterday Emily Swift and crew traveled in a time machine to the 70s. Today, get out your sunscreen… we’re hitting the beach!
To the tune of: Vacation, by The Go-Go’s.
“What a wild night,” Lucie ran a towel over her wet hair. They’d exited the disco to find Big Rabbit waiting in the SUV. He drove them to the hotel.
“Shh.” Emily winced.
“I like cocktails as much as anyone, but requesting double shots of vodka every time you ordered? Amateur.” Lucie turned as a note slid under the room door. She read it aloud. “It’s from Brown. She says: Grab your bathing suits, you’re in Florida. The guys are in the lot.”
Thirty minutes later, the women stepped outside into the bright morning, bathing suits worn under sundresses.
“There.” Tara pointed. Templeton sat behind a pair of mirrored aviators in the driver’s seat.
Rabbit rode shotgun. He eyeballed them as they climbed inside. “Emily’s looking rough.”
She scowled as she popped an aspirin.
“Destination?” Lucie asked.
Rabbit held up the itinerary. “Siesta Keys. Crescent Beach.”
Upon arrival, the bunch grabbed towels from the back of the SUV. Tara found an old boom box and fiddled with the dial. Vacation, by The Go-Go’s, sang from the speakers.
On the sand, Rabbit kicked off his boots and pulled off his black t-shirt and cargo shorts. In a pair of black swim trunks, he dashed toward the water, diving into the first wave.
“He’s the whitest man I’ve ever seen.” Tara dropped her towel onto the sand.
Lucie pulled her sundress over her head. She wore a red retro one-piece suit underneath. “He glows.”
Templeton froze. He pretended to look down the beach.
“You bring shorts?” Tara asked him. She nodded toward his outfit. “Not that the Miami Vice look is bad.”
“A little help?” Lucie handed Templeton her sunscreen before turning away. She lifted her hair. “Make sure you get my shoulders.”
Templeton made a strangled noise in the back of his throat before passing the bottle to Emily. They watched him stalk off down the shoreline.
“That was mean,” Emily chuckled as she rubbed sunscreen on Lucie’s back.
Lucie smiled wickedly. “I know.”
…Tune in tomorrow as Emily jots a message on a postcard and gets a surprise. (That post is now available… click here!)

Readers – Not on Instagram?
That’s okay! I’ll be sharing my Instagram posts daily here on my blogsite AND daily on Facebook at Writer Tracy Brown so you can read them there, too. Make sure you check for a new story every day in February!
What’s This Mean for Door to Door Characters? I’ll be dropping Emily Swift and crew into a story, a scene, a situation, etc. matching the “prompt of the day” from the challenge. Writing prompts include: finding a dead body, having a house party, celebrating New Year’s Eve, bungee jumping, breaking down on a deserted road, getting a first kiss – and much more!
What makes the #RockTheTurvy extra special is that I’ll also be picking a song to go with the scene.
If you ARE on Instagram, make sure you’re following me at https://www.instagram.com/WriterTracyBrown/ to see the posts there! But again, as long as you check out my blog list or my Writer Tracy Brown page every day, you can read all the short stories without Instagram. 🙂
