🗣️ It’s Day 5 of the #TopsyTurvyWhatsMyLine writing challenge! Yesterday Lucie tried to engage Templeton via texts while Sebastian set his plan into motion. Today’s dialogue prompt is: “Why are you holding a chicken?”
Here we go!
“Why are you holding a chicken?” Lucie frowned, eyeballing the ball of feathers snuggled between Big Rabbit’s massive biceps.
“I can’t let the little thing loose – she’ll get hurt in the crowd!” He cuddled the black and white chicken to his chest. His big, brown eyes begged Lucie for help. “Can we take her back to your house?”
“Oh, no you don’t,” Lucie held up a hand. “You already brought me a stray cat and trust me, Flame is more work than he’s worth some days.”
“It probably escaped from the petting zoo,” Tara said as she joined them. She dipped a deep-fried chicken tender into a paper condiment cup filled with BBQ sauce before taking a loud, crunchy bite. Horrified, Big Rabbit backed away.
“There you go,” Lucie said, nodding. “You can take the chicken –”
“Mimi.”
Lucie stopped. “What?”
“Mimi. She said her name is Mimi.”
“O-kay,” Lucie continued. “You can take Mimi to the petting zoo. They’ll know what to do with her.”
“But…” Big Rabbit glanced down at the happy hen pecking at his shirtsleeve. “Maybe she escaped because she was lonely and –”
“There you are, Cluckers!” cried a short, squat man with a long, waxed mustache. It jutted out from underneath his nose like a vintage airplane propeller. “The show is about to begin – your fans await!” He dashed in and plucked the chicken from big Rabbit’s arms before scurrying back into the crowd.
Big Rabbit, Lucie, and Tara stood frozen, mouths agape.
“Show?” repeated Tara.
“Fans?” wondered Lucie.
“Cluckers?” Big Rabbit pulled a face.
“Excuse me,” interrupted a man, tapping Lucie on her shoulder. “I’ve been asked to deliver this to you.” He handed her a ticket.
“What’s this for?” Lucie examined the ticket. It read: Admit One, House of Mirrors. She raised her head to ask the man who had sent it, but he was gone. Curious, she thought, wandering in the direction of the House of Mirrors…
