It’s day 6 of the #RockTheTurvy writing challenge over on Instagram! Yesterday Emily Swift and crew hit the beach. Today Emily writes a post card to Jack.
To the tune of: Out Of My Head, by Fastball.
Emily purchased an oversized postcard from a sidewalk vendor and returned to her spot under the beach umbrella. She sat cross-legged and penned a note to Jack.
I know it’s hard when I leave home, she wrote, but don’t worry. Everything’s fine this time around and I’ll be back before you know it. So far we did karaoke night (everyone said I was GREAT); hit a disco; and now we’re at the beach.
Emily chewed on the pen cap and hesitated before adding: Sometimes I worry we’ll lose what we have because I’m always taking off… Sometimes I worry I’ll lose you, Jack. I miss you. I wish you were here with me.
A shadow stretched along her towel and touched a bare knee. Emily lifted her head, squinting up at the bright sky. Someone stood in front of the umbrella. She patted the ground and located her sunglasses, slipping them on as the figure squatted beside her. The person reached out a hand.
“Jack!” Emily squealed, grabbing the hand and pulling her boyfriend in for a hug. “What are you doing here?”
Jack untangled himself from Emily’s grasp. He dropped a kiss on the tip of her sunscreened nose. “A plane ticket showed up at the house right after you left. Brown said she thought the two of us deserved a mini vacation.”
He continued as he settled on the towel next to Emily. “I flew into Sarasota about an hour ago. Some mammoth man was waiting with a sign saying: Jack, I’m here to take you to Emily.”
Emily laughed. “Massive mop of black curls? Incredibly polite?”
“That’d be him. Told me to call him Big Rabbit. No way was I arguing with a guy that size.” Jack gazed out across the beach. “Where’s everyone?”
“Tara and Lucie are in the water with Rabbit. I have no idea where Templeton went,” Emily said.
“I think I saw him at a cabana bar with an umbrella drink,” Jack replied.
“How long are you staying?” Emily asked.
“One night.”
“Then let’s make it worthwhile.” Emily climbed to her feet, holding out her hand. “Let’s go dip our toes in the water.”
…Tune in tomorrow as I’m sharing a snippet from the first book in the Bellerose Witchline series! (Now posted! Find the snippet here.)

Readers – Not on Instagram?
That’s okay! I’ll be sharing my Instagram posts daily here on my blogsite AND daily on Facebook at Writer Tracy Brown so you can read them there, too. Make sure you check for a new story every day in February!
What’s This Mean for Door to Door Characters? I’ll be dropping Emily Swift and crew into a story, a scene, a situation, etc. matching the “prompt of the day” from the challenge. Writing prompts include: finding a dead body, having a house party, celebrating New Year’s Eve, bungee jumping, breaking down on a deserted road, getting a first kiss – and much more!
What makes the #RockTheTurvy extra special is that I’ll also be picking a song to go with the scene.
If you ARE on Instagram, make sure you’re following me at https://www.instagram.com/WriterTracyBrown/ to see the posts there! But again, as long as you check out my blog list or my Writer Tracy Brown page every day, you can read all the short stories without Instagram. 🙂
