🎶 It’s Day 7 of the #12DaysOfTurvy mini writing challenge over on Instagram! Yesterday some pent-up energy was released. Today the crew heads to a Karaoke bar. Here we go!
The mood lightened, the odd little group headed for Lucie’s townhouse as new snowflakes fell.
Lucie checked her watch. “The oven kicked on 30 minutes ago. We have two hours before dinner.”
“Perfect.” Flame flashed a toothy smile. “Then there’s time for karaoke. The bar’s a block away.”
“Didn’t we already do a karaoke post in a past Turvy?” Tara asked.
“But I wasn’t there,” Flame explained.
“I don’t think –” Lucie began.
“Plenty of time, Luscious!” Flame led the others across the street.
“We can’t let him sing,” Lucie mumbled to Rabbit as they followed.
“Not so hot?”
“About the same level of talent as Emily.”
Rabbit winced.
The early hour meant a fairly empty bar, and the server pointed to one of the bigger tables. “If you want to sing, it’s sort of self-serve for another hour,” she said.
“I got this,” Flame assured everyone before hurrying off.
“Drinks?” The server wrote down several orders including a round of Snowball Shooters.
After a few minutes of fumbling, Flame strolled out onto the stage to the first bars of a familiar holiday tune and started to “sing.” The lyrics, however, weren’t exactly a match.
“Santa buddy?” Emily frowned.
“Santa Baby. Michael Bublé’s version,” Tara clarified.
Everyone listened in silence. Finally, Big Rabbit whispered. “This really sucks.”
“Get up there,” Rabbit nudged Lucie. She shook her head and he pushed her shoulder again. “Go.”
“Lucie, Lucie, Lucie!” Emily and Tara chanted.
“Fine,” Lucie stood, briefly making eye contact with a quiet Sebastian before joining Flame near the stage. Minutes later, the first strains of 2000 Miles streamed from the speakers. Lucie stepped into the spotlight and began to sing.
“Nice choice, wayward witch,” Sebastian said softly before tossing back a shot.
Emily’s attention pulled away from her friend when she sensed Templeton’s door travel energy billowing into the room. He stood on the other side of the bar, his focus on the stage.
Lucie continued to sing:
In these frozen and silent nights
Sometimes in a dream
You appear
Outside under the purple sky
Diamonds in the snow
Sparkle…
– 2000 Miles, by The Pretenders. Lyrics by Chrissie Hynde.
