🧚 It’s Day 9 of the #FairyTaleMe22 writing challenge on Instagram! Yesterday, the D2D crew discussed special skills. Today the prompt asks: What sets you apart?
Tara nabbed the clipboard and skimmed the prompts. “This is a good one.”
“What is it?” Rabbit climbed on the barstool beside Lucie. She bumped her shoulder into his. He grinned.
“What sets you apart? Imagine Rapunzel’s hair or Cinderella’s kindness.” Tara looked up. “You know, some things seem obvious, but if we scratched below the surface, we could more fully round out the person for the reader.”
“Such as?” Emily opened a bottle of water.
“Take Templeton. He’s a ‘master of many things’ – his words, not mine – but he’s clearly emotionally stunted. It’s somewhat of a dichotomy.” Tara studied the clipboard.
“I’ve seen Templeton’s eyes change in odd ways,” Big Rabbit said low to Emily. “But this is the first time I’ve seen them bug out of his head. Is he going to go nuclear?”
“No,” Emily whispered back. “Templeton’s always liked Tara… but wow.”
Lucie’s eyes had also widened. “Ah, so that’s a… thought. Let me go now. Um, Big Rabbit. Most people would think it’s your size – your muscles and strength – but I’d argue it’s your manners. You’re one of the most polite people I know.”
“Thank you, Lucie.” His cheeks pinked. “My mother’s doing. My turn. Emily, people ding you for never listening, taking off, and breaking rules. But the fact is you have a really demanding moral compass and no matter what others may want you to do, you’re willing to take the risk to do the right thing.”
Emily put her hand to her chest. “I don’t know what to say, Big Rabbit. Thank you.”
Big Rabbit continued. “And Lucie, it’s not the fire living under your skin. It’s your heart. It’s too big.”
“Too big?” Lucie cocked her head to the side.
“You let too many men live in it,” Big Rabbit nodded, unaware of the awkward vibe developing. “This is fun! And Rabbit, people confuse what you do for others as caretaking, but it’s really showing love through acts –it’s your love language.”
Rabbit’s brow dipped. “Someone else want to take over the discussion?”
“I’m on it,” Tara replied. “I’ll do me. People think I’m only a man-crazy bookseller. The truth is I’m really –”
“The most loyal friend anyone could ask for,” Emily cut in, smiling.
