It’s day 9 of the #RockTheTurvy writing challenge over on Instagram! Yesterday the power went out. Today the crew picks up a hitchhiker AND goes backstage to meet a rock star!
To the tune of: Holiday, by Green Day.
“Green Day in Vegas!” Tara waved tickets from the passenger seat.
Lucie turned the music down as her eyes caught a lone hitchhiker on the side of the road. He spun in a tight circle as she slowed the SUV, the sun bouncing off his red-blond waves. A guitar case sat at his feet.
“Is this a good idea?” Emily asked from the second row. She was echoed with protests from Rabbit. He’d joined Templeton in the far back.
“Brown said to pick up hitchhikers.” Tara lowered the window. “Hey.”
“Hey,” the man grinned, leaning his arms against the door. He glanced at the others in the back before focusing on Lucie. “Heading to Vegas?”
“Get in,” Lucie said. Tara abandoned her seat, moving into the space by Emily. The lanky man slid into the front, flashing a pair of brilliant amber eyes at Lucie.
“Templeton’s having a fit!” Emily stage-whispered to Tara.
“Playing in Vegas?” Lucie ignored the others. She nodded at the guitar case held between his knees. An orange flame decorated the side.
“Not this time. Filling in as a roadie for Green Day,” he replied.
“We’ve got tickets!” Tara squealed. “Can we meet Billie Joe?”
Later that night…
“That was THE BEST concert,” Tara yelled.
“Wear earplugs next time,” Lucie winced. The man she’d nicknamed Flame led the three ladies plus Rabbit down a hall for a chance to meet Billie Joe Armstrong. Templeton skipped the concert for a private poker game.
“Wait here,” Flame directed. “I’ll go find him.” He disappeared around a corner
A beat later, Billie Joe stepped into the hall from behind a set of closed doors. He hesitated when he saw the quartet of fans but then shrugged. “Did you guys see an orange cat running through here?”
“No cats,” answered Emily. “But we’ve got a Rabbit.”
“Rabbits are cool,” Billie Joe replied. “But I’ve got to find my cat.”
Emily, Tara, Lucie, and Rabbit each lifted a hand and waved as Billie Joe ducked back through the doors.
“THAT,” Tara shouted, “was AMAZING.”

Readers – Not on Instagram?
That’s okay! I’ll be sharing my Instagram posts daily here on my blogsite AND daily on Facebook at Writer Tracy Brown so you can read them there, too. Make sure you check for a new story every day in February!
What’s This Mean for Door to Door Characters? I’ll be dropping Emily Swift and crew into a story, a scene, a situation, etc. matching the “prompt of the day” from the challenge. Writing prompts include: finding a dead body, having a house party, celebrating New Year’s Eve, bungee jumping, breaking down on a deserted road, getting a first kiss – and much more!
What makes the #RockTheTurvy extra special is that I’ll also be picking a song to go with the scene.
If you ARE on Instagram, make sure you’re following me at https://www.instagram.com/WriterTracyBrown/ to see the posts there! But again, as long as you check out my blog list or my Writer Tracy Brown page every day, you can read all the short stories without Instagram. 🙂
