Brook Peterson did not disappoint with A History of Murder—this is the PERFECT cozy mystery. It’s challenging to build a sound plot and interesting characters that many readers can identify with, but Peterson did both. From the beginning little “roadside fiasco,” to the very real dread many of us feel when returning to our home towns (even without the main character’s baggage), Peterson wrote a believable and compelling mystery.

Beauty and the Alchemist is an absolutely charming (fairy) tale. I want to call out the world-building found in this first-in-series. Simply pointing out “compelling, vibrant language” is not good enough. Precise wording and phrasing are needed to create such a magnificent landscape on the page. Hartford’s world-building—through settings, “rules” of the land (the world known as Beyond), multiple histories, storytelling *by* the characters, plus main character Red’s own explanations of alchemy processes—has raised the bar.
