🗣️ Come listen to — or watch — Episode 14 of my podcast, 12 Minutes (or less!) with the Author. Well, I’ve been threatening it for a while: a blooper reel. There are days when I just can’t seem to get out of my own way — and some guests push me over the giggles ledge. (I’m looking at you, author Shari T. Mitchell!)
I hope you get a kick out of this video — with a little recorded audio at the end. Apparently, I can’t say the word: repeatedly. Then, Jessica Cantwell’s bit on sex language in books totally flummoxed me!

Interview with Jessica Cantwell
T.L. Brown: (shifting in chair) I…I also try to look skinnier.
So, hey there. Hey there. Hey there. Hey there. Okay. Are you ready?
Hey there. Welcome to another episode of 12 Minutes (or less!) with the Author. Today I am over the moon because we have author Jessica Cantwell. Jessica lives with her family and cats in a charming seaside town on the eastern end of Long Island. When she’s not writing, you can find Jessica reading, yard sale rummaging, drawing, painting…reefer. (pauses) Sorry, we’re going to restart that.
I’m so jinxed by Shari! That’s totally Shari. We’re blaming her. We’re going to blame her.
Jessica Cantwell: (indulges host) Alright, it’s all her fault.
T.L. Brown: All her fault. Okay, here we go. All righty.
(clears throat)

T.L. Brown: Okay. (laughs, then obsessively fixes hair, primping and watching the screen)
Jennifer Brasington-Crowley: This door…The dog keeps pushing that door open so…

Interview with Joanna Monahan
T.L. Brown: Record…And let’s pull up my…script. I don’t care how many times you do anything in life, I always need a script.
Joanna Monahan: Mmm-hmm. I’ve got my notes.
T.L. Brown: Ohh, good. Alright. Alright. So, Joanna Monahan, alright.
Hey there, welcome to 12 Minutes (or less!) with the Author. Today I’m very excited because we have author Joanna Monahan, who just released her first book, Something Better. Joanna writes women’s fiction with a GenX flair. She lives in North Carolina with her husband, their two children, and one hangry cat. When she isn’t writing, Joanna enjoys theatre, baseball, and bookmarking recipes she will never write… Sh*t! MAKE. Alright. Sorry about that. We’re going to restart that.
Joanna Monahan: No worries.
T.L. Brown: See, I…I can’t see my screen without my glasses. (laughs) So I’m like, “she will never write a recipe.”
All right, here we go. Hey there, welcome to 12 Minutes (or less!) with the Author.

T.L. Brown: Okay, let me get over to… Alright.
Alright, I’m going to say your name one more time, and I know it’s the English way because I don’t think I can pull off the French way convincingly. (hangs head)
Sorry, I’m so sorry. Danielle. Paquette. Harvey, is that good enough?
Danielle Paquette-Harvey: Yes!
T.L. Brown: Okay, alright. Thank you. Thank you. Alright. So. (clears throat) Okay. Here we go.

Bloopers from my audio recording of podcast episode 4.2, “Let’s talk about sex (scenes), baby!” featuring thoughts and advice from authors Bruce Spydar and Jessica Cantwell.
T.L. Brown:
(recording this as I read the script…in my bedroom closet*)
When did you think you took a risk in a sex scene? What was it? How is it received?
Bruce Spydar. In Refining My Dining, I took a risk with the whole book as a male author writing for the first time from a female point of view and trying to understand and convey sexual situations…
(pauses)
Bruce Spydar.
Hmm.
(pauses)
Bruce Spydar. In Refining My Dining, I took a risk with the whole book as a male author writing for the first time from a female point of view and trying to understand and convey sexual situations from both a female perspective and in a humorous manner…
Next question, what language is preferred by your readers? Examples…
Hmm.
(pauses)
Next question, what language is preferred by your readers? Examples include penis versus c*ck versus member versus shaft. Making love versus… (long pause) F-ing.
(takes a deep breath)
Next question, what language is preferred by your readers? Examples: Penis versus c*ck versus member versus shaft. Making love versus f-ing. In other words, if you include sex scenes in your stories, what type of language does your reader expect?
Jessica Cantwell. As a reader and a writer, I think it is important to use a variety of words and describe a variety of scenes and actions. No one wants to read about vanilla missionary sex over and over. For example, “name redacted” uses the same words re-petee-it. Hmm.

No one wants to read about vanilla missionary sex over and over again. For example, “name redacted” uses the same words repeatedly, and all scenes start with, “he entered two fingers, then swirled his thumb around…” Boring! Sex should be spontaneous, fun, and enjoyable. Reading it should be the same.
(long pause from T.L. Brown)
One more try…

This has been 12 Minutes (or less!) with the Author. Thanks for listening to today’s episode. Hope you can join me for the next one. Until then, this is Tracy, AKA author T.L. Brown signing off.
* Seriously, in my bedroom closet. The hanging clothes dampen the external noise. 🙂
