Let’s go back in time…
🎩 John Templeton returned home late following dinner in downtown Matar. Mr. Archie had retired for the evening, leaving a note that Templeton’s mother would arrive at 6pm the next day. Dinner would be at 7pm.
Templeton sighed. The visit was unavoidable. It was Christmas.
The day itself would be quiet. Mr. Archie’s sister, Elizabeth, would also visit. He’d join them for a light lunch. A corner of his mouth lifted. Occasionally, Beth came to the estate when Templeton was a boy –and his mother was out. One afternoon, she sported him away to a carnival. He was terrified but adored the young babysitter who led him through the crowd. He clung to her skirt as she pointed out different rides, a ribbon of tickets trailing from her fingers.
Warily, he appraised the Ferris Wheel. At the top, he’d be able to see everything. He nodded toward the ride. “That one.”
They joined the line. A friend spotted Beth, and the two women chatted. Across the way, past a chain-link fence, a man with a megaphone announced the next act. Curious, Templeton took advantage of Beth’s split attention and slipped away. Poking between two booths, he peered through the fence. The music grew louder, and a line of women emerged from behind a curtain, each wearing…He frowned. Bathing suits? These weren’t like any he’d ever seen. Fringe hung from fabric barely containing…Templeton leaned into the fence; his fingers curled around the metal. There were feathers, and the rustle of beads, and so much soft…Oh! The dancers wandered the length of the stage. The curtain rose, revealing a string band.
A busty redhead glanced in his direction as she danced. She smiled prettily, bending and blowing him a kiss. Mortified, Templeton spun and ran smack into Beth.
“You shouldn’t wander off, John,” she admonished, her gaze sweeping past him, one eyebrow raised. The tips of Templeton’s ears grew red.
Beth guided him back to the line. The wheel turned, allowing them to climb into an empty seat. As it lifted, Beth casually motioned toward the left. At the top of the Ferris Wheel, Templeton could see everything –including a tiny version of a curvy carnival dancer.
