After several weeks of slipping, sliding, and crashing to my knees, I was getting better at staying on my feet during door travel. Once I discovered which door could serve as a portal, I could sense its power zipping up from the bottom in thick rivers before hitting the top of the doorframe and zooming down the sides. The handle vibrated with the invitation – c’mon in Emily, this is the right door.
Sometimes the doors rattled; other times they buzzed or hummed. But they all threw off the vibration I sought when looking to move from where I was to where I needed to be. The ‘right’ door was easy to find. My heightened awareness dialed in quickly. Actual door travel was never hard for me. Even destination accuracy was improving after a rocky start.
But the arrival? Brutal.
As the first and only child of the late Salesman Daniel Swift – that’s Salesman with a capital ‘S’ – I inherited this unique ability to travel from place to place simply by stepping through a door. The discovery came after a series of unplanned travels took me to unexpected destinations. Some were fairly tame, like ending up in my bathroom instead of the pantry. Others were more frightening, taking me from my hometown in Upstate New York to a back alley in a strange world called the Empire…

“What I need you to do is raise your energy to find the right door, direct the energy to move into a tunnel of power, but then rein it back before you arrive so that you’re not shooting through the door to the other side. You need to recognize when to center and still the power so you arrive as if stepping into a room, not blasting in like a S.W.A.T. team.” Jo punctuated the description of what I needed to do with a series of gestures. Put a baton in her hand and from a distance you’d think she was directing a symphony.
“I understand what you’re saying,” I replied. “But it’s over so fast. I touch the doorknob and BAM! I’m through it to the other side. I’m not trying to rush.”
Jo cocked her head to the side. “I understand what you’re describing. What I’m telling you is that you can control the energy. Raise, channel, direct, pull back.”
“Maybe I should try to pull back before I channel it.”
“Maybe. And maybe you’ll end up taking a wrong turn.” She raised her eyebrows.
I blew out a breath in response. “I’ve gotten much better. Plus, I think the issue is less about pulling back too early and more about… I don’t know. Just getting shoved through the wrong door when arriving.”
Jo shook her head. “No, it’s not.” She stood and began to pack up her paperwork, sliding documents into a folder before putting it into her briefcase. She snapped it shut and looked up at me with a smile. “But you will get there. I have no doubt. You need to keep studying. Continue to practice raising and lowering the energy when you are calm, when you are meditating. Harness it.”
I rolled my eyes. “Harness it. It’s a beast.”
“I get it, Emily,” Jo said. “And, I suspect you have a significantly high level of energy designed for door travel. That’s why you were traveling before you even knew you could. Your excitement, your fear – all of that fueled the power Salesmen need…”
